Use of Partial Stimulus Information by Cochlear Implant Patients and Normal-Hearing Listeners in Identifying Spoken Words: Some Preliminary Analyses1
نویسندگان
چکیده
An error analysis of the word recognition responses of cochlear implant patients and normal-hearing listeners was conducted to determine the types of partial information used by these two populations when they identify spoken words under auditory-alone and audiovisual conditions. The results revealed that different types of partial information are used by the two groups in identifying spoken words under audioalone or audiovisual presentation. Different types of partial information are also used in identifying words with different lexical properties. However, there were no significant interactions with hearing status, indicating that cochlear implant patients and normalhearing listeners identify spoken words in a similar manner. The information available to patients with cochlear implants preserves much of the partial information necessary for accurate spoken word recognition.

An examination of the effect of talker familiarity on the sentence recognition skills of cochlear implant users
Three experiments examined normal-hearing and cochlear-implant listeners’ abilities to perceive and use talker-specific information in the speech signal. In Experiment 1 voice similarity judgments were gathered from normal-hearing listeners to maximize variability across talkers used in Experiment 2. These judgments were submitted to a multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis; this solution was ...
متن کاملGap Duration Identification by Ci Users
Cochlear implant (CI) users show substantial individual differences in their ability to understand speech. Even the most successful CI users do not understand speech as well as normal hearing listeners. One explanation for these individual differences and limited speech perception abilities lies in their difficulty in discriminating or identifying spectral cues (e.g., formant frequencies; Tong ...
متن کاملPerception of “Elliptical Speech” by an Adult Hearing-Impaired Listener with a Cochlear Implant: Some Preliminary Findings on Coarse-Coding in Speech Perception1
This paper examines the effects of elliptical speech (Miller & Nicely, 1955) on the speech perception performance of an adult hearing-impaired listener with a cochlear implant. A group of 20 normal-hearing adult listeners were used for comparison. Two experiments were carried out using sets of normal and anomalous English sentences. Two versions of each set of sentences were constructed. One ve...
متن کاملPerceptual learning and nonword repetition using a cochlear implant simulation.
This study examined the effects of perceptual learning on nonword repetition performance of normal-hearing listeners who were exposed to severely degraded auditory conditions that were designed to simulate the auditory input of a cochlear implant. Twenty normal-hearing adult listeners completed a nonword repetition task using an eight-band, frequency-shifted cochlear implant simulation strategy...
متن کاملLexico-semantic and acoustic-phonetic processes in the perception of noise-vocoded speech: implications for cochlear implantation
Noise-vocoding is a transformation which, when applied to speech, severely reduces spectral resolution and eliminates periodicity, yielding a stimulus that sounds "like a harsh whisper" (Scott et al., 2000, p. 2401). This process simulates a cochlear implant, where the activity of many thousand hair cells in the inner ear is replaced by direct stimulation of the auditory nerve by a small number...
